I recently came across this little gem at a garage sale outside Normandy, France, near Le château des Ducs d'Alençon. Could this be a relative to the chair posted by our friend, "Postcardcollector"? Notice the initials on her chair, D & A, what a mystery indeed....
As is, my chair appears to have all original leather, with major cracking on the seat... Any thoughts on the interesting design? Is that a dragon or devil?
How does one determine authenticity and accurate period?
Thanks crew; you're awesome! Love the site!

Hi RaynB, welcome to CW :-)

Your chair is same period than Postcardcollector's, 1880'.

The "dragon" is a Griffin, very used motif in that period, in Jewellery and wood carvings.

Google images for "griffin 19th century" to see more
It can be called gryphon too :-)
