I found this in my stuff when i moved recently - not in time for Christmas, but just afterwards. i really love it! they were so fragile that not many of them survive. i don't think they are made anymore. at least i never see them in mexico anymore. i'm sure there is a great story behind it too.
I believe this is a nativity piece, inexpensive, low-fired, that you can buy from a street vendor in most any town in Mexico. I have collected about 500 or so pieces like this to give to a local museum and they put it all together every Christmas season to make a huge colorful and interesting nativity. Besides the Holy Family there are farmers, animals, lakes, boats, children at play and lots of cactus pieces like the one shown. Individually they are nice but put together in a nativity they create a wonderful tableau for the holiday season.
Would love to see your pieces, rodolfo. :)
Especially your diablitos! :)
