This CW site is amazing. I really appreciate the variety and people. Here is a tapestry which which my wife found, rolled up, in a corner of a pole barn in the Alsace region of France. It appears to have been previously tacked to a frame using the old, black carpet tacks, which were left in the material when she bought it for 5.00 euros! It's approximately 70cm x 170cm, smells like dusty mildew but shows no signs of wear/tear. There appears to be two small villages in the background. A vineyard on the hills behind them, and two different castles on either side of the lake. One appears to be a fortress or Burg; the other is more of a palace, or Schloss. The maidens on the shore, appear to be wearing lovely, period dresses, and the trees in the foreground appear to be White Oak. No discernible markings or signatures, front or back. :-(
Mysteries abound! How old is this piece? Where is it from?
And from where is this scene depicting? Could it be a scene along the Moselle?
Thank you, Thomas. Great observation with the blue hues... Do you think it may be an indication of the period?
