This is something that I recently purchased at an auction here in Colorado. It is not signed by the artist. When I was doing some research on it the only thing I could look into was the labeling on the back. Which led me to Charles G Galder in Providence Rhode Island. Late 1800's - early 1900's. Unfortunately since I don't live in or anywhere close to Rhode Island I don't have access to the galleries located there. So I am trying to figure out which artists did Calder represent.

I purchased her because I think she is beautiful and reminded me of William Bouguereau's Jeune. He would have been alive when this was painted. Maybe she just looks like her, kind of. :-). She is small in size 9 x 12" framed. Bouguereau's were usually big, any ideas who painted this?

      Hello Tamara,

If you do a search for "label from Charles G. Calder" you will find a lot a paintings and many names. If I were you, I would include some key words such as portrait, not signed or unsigned.

Thanks Matisse, I will try that!

Charles G. Calder was a prominent merchant who
owned an artist supply store and was deeply involved
in Providence’s artistic community. This Painting is from the area sometimes around 1880-1900 period. This may be a Very important piece of Providence RI Art work! Like I stated He was in with the Best Painters of that era and time period! I would contact RISD Museum and get ther opinion, they may know just by style who painted this. Great Find!

Did you take it out of frame to see if signature is under frame edge?
    5. TamaraB TamaraB, 9 years ago
Hi Dizzydave, I have not taken the frame apart. If I get super brave I might though. I will check and see on contacting RISD as you suggest. When I searched the label I haven't found any artists that did similar work as this. It's usually landscapes or still life's. Thanks for your help!

This may be a reach, and it may not. But between 1880 and 1900 , a lot of paintings were coming out from the Examined South Kensington Art School, a lot of paintings used the same color for a back drop to a lot of their paintings. He may have picked up fine art works from students with fine Art Certificates. Just a thought. The Art School is very interesting about it's works. And like your painting a lot. Good luck to you.

Thanks for the lead johncobb! I googled Kensington art school in that time frame and there were a few artist doing portraits like mine. A few years ago I was in the park across from the school. But I didn't have the painting yet. I guess I should go back...lol.

Great painting you have there! Im in the same boat, recently brought a painting for
$45 only because its damaged some. but thought frame was worth the price. has old label on the back that says " Charles G Calder" Providence Rhode Island. I tried listing my painting on my page not sure if it took?

Thanks JOEinSTLOUIS, I checked out your show and tell and it is up, it is a great frame. If you like the painting enough there are a lot of artists that could fix the paint loss. Regards,

Hi Tamara, I know this is an old post but I just happen to buy a painting and have more or less your same story, I wanted to know how your story ended with this?
    12. TamaraB TamaraB, 3 years ago
Hi MorenoMiami, the last couple of posts were to look into the RISD, Rhode island school of design, Kensington and Edward Bannister. But my research didn’t come up with any certainty on the origins of the painting other than what is on the label. I still love it and look at it every day…it would be cool if it were super valuable, but I am ok with it either way.
