I would appreciate anyone who has any information about either type chest. They are family pieces, and I was given both by my mother (born 1912) who got them from my grandparents. My grandfather's family was German and either my maternal great-grandparents or my great-great grandparents emigrated from Germany. I'm going to try to research that.

The painted chest has the date 1854 on it (my great-grandfather was born in 1853, my great-grandmother a bit later). Its dimensions are 43 inches by 22 inches and 17 inches high.

The side panel has a partial sticker with the word Bremen clearly visible.

The plain chest is much smaller and has the family name Hoffman (but on the chest it is spelled Hofman), the word Amerika, and what I assume was the name of the ship, Andrea or maybe Andreas. It also has a clearly visible Bremen sticker on its side.

Both chests have a small interior wooden compartment.

Any information as to either type of chest would be much appreciated

Are these chests typical of the era or of any region of Germany? I'm particularly interested in the design. I've heard the term Pennsylvania Dutch, but the painted chest, I assume, was decorated in Germany and then shipped here.
