Found just yesterday at an estate sale, this was a chalkware advertising piece for RCA. Just 4-1/4 inches tall, he isn't in perfect condition--he's seen a lot of love in his time. Instantly recognizable near and far. There was also available at the sale a gorgeous floor model of the famous Victorola, touted as "still works," but I didn't bring that one home as well. The base shows his name on one side, the back side reads "Everything Musical," and the third side has the store name in NC where this little piece originated. Haven't researched the date for when the Victorolas came out, but maybe the 30's ?

Thanks, Thomas, for sending the scoop on Nipper. I probably knew the story and that his name was Nipper, but just needed to have my memory refreshed. Do you by chance remember the time period of Nipper's reign? I think that perhaps I should change the name on the title of this posting. Thanks again. Judy

Well, I'm not sure this little Nipper goes that far back, but I do think he is quite old. Definitely an advertising piece. Evidence he was handled quite a bit and well loved. Thanks again.

I have a heavy wooden "nipper". I'm guessing two pieces of carved wood since he has on a metal collar and the head may be a separate piece from the body. He is pretty detailed and is 21" tall. The tips of two carved toes are chipped off but other than someone painting him "hot pink" he is in excellent condition. I believe he was a store display. I cannot find any other references to a similar one in my searches as is most were either made of paper mache or chalk. Anyone have advice as to value...?...I'm thinking he is quite rare !! Thanks.

There is a huge "NIPPER" collection seen at the Charles Templeton Music Archives ( Mississippi State University.) He was a dear friend of mine, and a wonderful gentleman in the tradition of the Old South.Twice took me to the Ragtime Festival on the showboat in St.Louis ( I could never have afforded the plane fare and accommodations. ) I met all my ragtime friends there, and top pianists in my sheet music organization. What a life experience for me! God rest his soul.....
