Stoneware jug embossed: "THEO J. LALA / Dealer in / Groceries, Wines & Liquors, / Cor. Tesche & Slidell Aves, / ALGIERS, LA." 8 1/2" tall, no cracks- - near mint condition.
I lived in Algiers during the 80's and 90's and dug lots of privies with friend Bobby. Most of these privies were circa 1870-85 with some pontils and lots of of blob sodas. Algiers is now part of New Orleans, but used to be a separate community across the Mississippi from the French Quarter with lots of history dating back to the 1700's. I recently returned for a dig with Bobby- - we were armed with new 4 ft. probes and found several brick liners that probably dated back to 1870-85. The glass we found was mostly 1890 - 1905 and it is likely that the privies had been "cleaned" and reused before being abandoned and filled in. The above described jug is probably circa 1895-1905. There were several more intact but unmarked solid brown jugs, but this one was a prize for me. The second image shows the historic tiled sidewalk entrance and the empty lot where the company store used to be. I can't find any references to the jug itself, so any information would be appreciated. Steve Hickman
