    Thanks to UncleRon I know this item is a turnscrew, much like the screwdriver we use today. Don't know the history of this or how old but I will be looking into it, now that I know what it is.

      This is an old "turnscrew", what we now call a "screwdriver." The hole likely was for inserting a rod to exert more pressure by using two hands. Beautiful handle!
