U shaped chair

I got this wooden chair from an estate sale in Collegeville, PA. The gentleman that owned it believed it to be French and would comment that it had some worth when he was alive. I have not seen any U-shaped chairs quite like it. If anyone knows of its origin or time period, if it might have been part of a dining set, etc. I would be interested to hear.
