Lydia Yavorska, Princess Bariatinsky, (1871-1921) was an actress who introduced 'Anna Karenina' to the British stage. It was enormously popular, and ran to 220+ performances, halted only by the outbreak of WWI when she returned to Russia. She escaped from Russia following the Revolution, and returned to England. Her grave is at Old Shoreham, Sussex.
The first picture is a close-up from a card announcing a performance in Newcastle-on-Tyne. The same card was posted at www.collectorsweekly.com/stories/149637-russian-princess-bariatinsky-playing-an An identical image was used in the advertisement illustrated above which appeared in The Telegraph on 7 May 1914 to announce a season at the Scala, London.
The next card (size 140 x 80mm) gives details of the run at the Scala Theatre, but uses a photographic image produced by the prestigious Dover Street studios.
The Princess was world-famous in her day, but is largely forgotten now. You can see more information about her very dramatic life at aprincessinshoreham.org
