Hi there CW Gang:
Here is another soapstone piece I had for a while. Soapstone carving of either a Bird or a seal. I think it is a Bird......This is done in the INUIT STYLE but the piece and its artist are not Inuit. DIMU is actually the signature of a German-Canadian artist named DIETRICH MUCKENHEIM. The works of the somewhat mysterious and quite sparse. His pieces are usually dated to the 1960s. A nice hand-carved soapstone "in the Inuit style".
*** Mine is only Signed with DIMU but the last photo you will see a "Sample Label' that might have been attached to this at one time. The last photo shows an example of an original Dimu label for provenance.
Thanks for LOOKING / LOVING !

Great little piece and info. Thanks for sharing.
Used to go to Waddingtons in T.O. all the time and they often had inuit auctions also.
A great little carving.
BTW pregnant seal.
I just found a piece of soap stone with the initials dimu on it. Did a search n it brought me here. I don't collect but am trying to sell this so I can help my son get home. He's living in Manitoba and I haven't seen him in months. So if anyone would like to buy this round piece..that has "tuit" as in 'I'll get a round tuit' written on one side then plz msg me at rpse9804@hotmail.com
