I inherited this and here is all I know. My Dad had a note inside this that says
"Shenchu from Shanxi Province
Elm with red/brown lacquer
51 inches x 32.7 inches x 21.5 inches
Two stepped shelves for the spirit tablets of the ancestors. Post and beam construction and screening walls are decorated with dragons and lotuses as a protection against fires. Above the door, there is an inscribed plaque and paired couplets hang on the central columns. Rare. Very few got out of China and especially not in one piece and great condition. Treasure."
I really need to find a local appraiser.. Oy this is all over my head.
Hi
I saw something just like this at the entryway of a popular Shanghai restaurant. It held a statue and burning incense. I recall a gentleman from Shanghai told us it was for prayer . Good luck discovering more about your treasure.
