My grandmother had this hanging in her bathroom for as long as I could remember, and as nobody in the family wanted him I took him in. He's at least 50-60 years old, probably older. I was recently told he's a piece of carnival chalkware. My grandmother lived in our southern Ontario town all her life and was a kid during the Great Depression. I have a feeling one of her family members may have won him at the local fair around this time. He wasn't exactly the sort of thing my grandmother would have liked as a prize but she may have held onto him for sentimental reasons.
His paint has always looked like that far as I can recall. Probably my grandmother washed him several times.
We always called him the "Man in the Moon". I don't know if that's who he's supposed to be or not.
If anyone could give me any information on what he is, who he's supposed to be or if I'm correctly guessing his age, please let me know.
He has to be the Man in the Moon I think! I love him.
i have one that is similar which is an advertisement for cigars - 1880s/90s. it's a little bit different though.
