I had my friend Geri examine this and test it for gold content - not even a smidge of 8kt. The cameo was compared with loose cameos of the same size and appears to be genuine. The attached pin is a bit strange. The hinge is wide so that dates it to Victorian times. The rollover clasp is a replacement either for a previous rollover or a C clasp.
I've read a few articles on pinchbeck and this brooch appears to fit the description.
The brooch measures about one inch by 3/4 inch.
Thanks, CW friends!
Woohooo! This is a tiny work of art! The shell cameo is wonderfully carved, and the minute pearl shaped border is very skillfully made!
If the mount don't react for gold, surely pinchbeck!
This alloy stay bright and is very appealing; French have a similar old alloy mimicking gold, called "pomponne" :-)
Very nice quality; great find!
Beautiful brooch, Bonnie, wow! :)

Very good information on the hinge. I think I can remember that. Thank you.

Baby steps.. ;)
