Came across this item in a skip at work, I thought it looked very unique,
I think it's an ashtray, can anyone tell me anything about it?

That is what it is - yours is missing the latch on top. Here's another quite similar one:

Thank you for the quick response, the latch is there, you just can't see it in the pictures, think I'll clean it up and put it on display
