We've had this piece for a couple of years and I kept nagging hubby to do something with it. It looked like it had been through a fire, and this is the finished result. Rhinestones, not gemstones, and brass. Any thoughts on age? Some of the metal near the top is extremely thin. Is this called a scepter pin? Were they worn on the shoulder? It's about 4-1/2" long. I found an identical hatpin on Pinterest, but just the top part, and no rhinestones.

You can date brooches by their clasps. This one has a "C"clasp, so can be as early as Victorian. Hubby did a fantastic job - it's beautiful!! Normally brooches which are curved are worn on the shoulder. This is probably a lapel pin. I have not seen one like this before, so maybe someone with more knowledge will comment on it.

Here's a video which explains how to date brooches:

Thank you so much! I have looked and looked and have not seen anything remotely similar, except the one piece I mentioned. Thank you also for the link!
