    This is for VioletOrange

Today someone 'loved' an old post by VioletOrange which showed a knuckle bowl and a basket with a looped thorn handle, both in a yellow and orange spatter. The basket being spatter on clear glass. There was inconclusive discussion of the bowl but the only reference to the basket came from Jericho, saying that he thought the basket was not Kralik.

I think that VioletOrange's basket is Welz. See the link below.

Pictures one and two show Welz baskets in the same shape as VioletOrange's basket.

Picture three shows a Welz basket with the same shape of thorn handle as on VioletOrange's basket.

Like VioletOrange's basket, picture four combines an Art Deco Welz décor (in this case 'Vertical Lines') with a Victorian period thorn handle. I find the Welz pieces that combine elements from two different periods very interesting, and hope to find more.

I've never been a fan of baskets but you're make me change my mind!

Me neither. Ivonne, but the first one is in a hard to find Décor and the last one is the only example of that décor I've ever seen.....so I make exceptions :)

Hi VioletOrange, it's my favourite too, for the self same reason!

Baskets really aren't cool - but I am sure we all have a few - I think they're so sweet and really far from our modern aesthetic ideal as to be jarring to the eye. Mine aren't all in rare decors - I still love them all in their way! The Welz ones have a multitude of complex rim shapes.

lol....I know they're not cool, Ian, and I'm not at all sure that we all have a few. However when an example such as #4 turns up I'd buy it regardless! You are certainly correct about the rims. Do you suppose we were twins, separated at birth?

I like all of these! I know as collectors we all have things that are not exactly to our taste but sometimes we need to look at them as products of a time and place and admire them as important parts of a whole.
This is what I tell myself anyway when things arrive I can't quite get excited about.....

Hi Karen and I know this is late, sorry! I do have one or two things that I appreciate as displaying great skill, but, as you put it, I can't quite get excited about. The baskets are in yet another category.....mostly they are in décors I've struggled to find in shapes I would prefer. Hmmmm collecting!

I don't own a basket but wish I did after seeing these. I love them all but No.4...what a beauty!! I've never seen a multi colour version of the Welz striped decor before. Such a lovely combination of colours.

Hi Fran, basket four is my favourite too. The day I spotted it I could hardly believe my eyes!
