This is a 1920s mourning brooch with black enamel sadly it has a number of the pearls missing.
Commonly worn by grieving widows. I found this in a thrift shop many years ago this kind of jewellery facinates me.

Interesting design, but am not entirely sure that it is a piece of mourning jewelry. Mourning jewelry is ordinarily made out of a precious metal rather than faux metal.

Other mediums are hair, wood and vulcanite.

Yes that is true and we always hear about those pieces but we don't often hear about the more modest pieces of jewellery which was worn by the very poor socio economic classes.

Yes I also have a Victorian hair fob with 15ct gold fittings which I will post shortly and I recently had a Victorian revolving locked with extensive repousse work and prince of wales hair plumage in the revolving compartment of the locket as I find these pieces facinating.

Would you let us know about the last picture - the red-stoned item.

Efesgirl I should clarify the point I made about affordable mourning jewellery.
New technology in the early 20th century made mourning jewellery more affordable then ever before hence cheaper metals faux pearls etc.The pearls on this particular mourning brooch of mine offer a clue-note the seed pearls which signify tears.

Hi Gillian, the red coloured glass stone brooch is a 1980s art deco in style only.
I find this brooch very attractive all the same:)
