Does anyone recognize the name of this artist? Tribe? And the type of ceremony this would be used within? This is encased within an acrylic shadow box measuring 42 x 44 x 3" deep. As you can see it has a wool woven handle with symbols. It is really an elaborate piece. Any information would really be appreciated. Thanks!

The name is Karl May. He is not a native American and didn't design this fan. The fan was probably on display in his museum. 405 is most likely the reference number.

Thank you, this is a great start, I will research the museum. I don't even know what type feathers these are either. :(

Sorry, it is not Native American. No Native American Indian tribe made fans like this. A few tribes did make feather dance fans, but none in this form.

Since y0u are asking for a tribal affiliation, it means you are not, in fact, "sure it is Native American."

If you do not specialize in Native American art, you may not be familiar with the Indian Arts and Crafts Act of 1990.

Basically, it says that it is a federal offense, with a $250,000 fine (more for businesses) to offer something for sale as Indian or Native American if it is not actually made by an enrolled member or artisan of a federally-recognized U.S. tribe.

Offenses can be reported by any tribe, tribal member, or any individual who feels they have in some way been harmed. That leaves a pretty wide area open for possible problems on the part of the seller. It apparently does not matter if the mistaken identification is intentional or not. It is the only area of selling where the seller assumes total liability if something is misidentified. The only way to avoid the risk is to never use the terms Indian, Native American, or the name of a specific tribe unless absolutely positive, and able to prove, that the item was made by them, and that it is a U.S. tribe.

      The feathers are chicken feathers.

Thanks, guess this is why CW re-reclassified in hand fans. The handle looked like Native American symbols woven on it, plus I was told it was a ceremonial fan. Now, to keep researching what it is and who made it. I know the quality of the plexiglass shadow box has bevel corners would cost $400 along in supply and labor to make.

Not that this is a sales site, CanyonRoad, I will revise my title, perhaps someone can tell me what I have? Thank you for the info. And now I know chicken feathers, too. Thank you.

Still looking for answers. It looks like on the handle, it has a turtle, an eagle and the cross, open to all suggestions. Thanks!
