I bought somebody's key collection at auction. Among the skeleton door keys and barrel furniture keys were two of these what I guess are hotel room door keys. One marked 2672 the other 1960. I'm guessing floor 19 and room 60. Must have been a pretty big place. The top of the key is fashioned after the top of an old gas streetlight and is marked sterling. What I would really like to know is WHERE they came from, help please.
Interesting key. Although hotel keys usually have numbers, rarely they are the room numbers. A sterling hotel key would seldom get returned,lol
This key looks out of proportion. The handle is rather small for the size of key and the loop is quite delicate looking for a key.
Check under a magnifying glass and see if the handle has been soldered to the key.
Yes, only the top is sterling, bottom is steel, but definitely original. If not a hotel key possibly an apartment key?
Note that the "swivel ring" isn't really a swivel - it's just part of the casting. That and the fact that the parts are soldered together rather than made as a single piece suggests to me that they are more decorative than intended for regular use. They could be safety deposit box keys, or the numbers may not even have any relationship to the key itself.
