We bought this at an antique store 30 years ago. They said it was circa 1900's. It is a drop front, key latch, bookcase sides, with a leather writing surface, Looks like oak with a mahogany stain. It has the original stain. We want to find out any history about the style, maker, or price.
Still wondering if anyone has any ideas about this desk?
I thinks it's very, very nice. It seems to be in fairly good condition. If you think it's worth it, I would be persuaded to refinish it (personally, I'm not coming over - oh darn eh.)
Just please do not make it a "shabby chic" thing. The wood is in good shape, and wood should be preserved if it can be. It has a very utilitarian look, which is almost teetering into Deco, especially with the book cases/shelves down the sides. also the draw pulls imho are original to the piece, and if you could get a closer photo of them that would be great. The left drawer pull bottom looks like it's got flipped over somehow and is back to front.
If you know an honest antique person, or a furniture expert check with them about the history, style, maker etc. CW can't give advice on prices.
Then there's always the good old google image search - ooodles t0 search through. I like doing those so I'll go have a quick look see.
Maybe a furniture guru will come by, and let you know what they think. But I still think it's a very nice piece indeed.
Sorry for the novel!
Would you also mind taking out the drawer and taking a photo (sorry I should have asked before), are the corners dovetailed? A photo of the back is needed as well. Can you find any labels anywhere, stuck to the under side of the drawer, or on the back.
