I got this from the thrift store today, one of the girls that works there told me it was Navajo, she is Native American. Is she correct or was she pulling my leg ?
Thanks for looking

I'm afraid she actually committed a federal offense, if she sold it to you as Navajo or Native American. This is a traditional "Buka" basket, from Papua New Guinea, in the South Pacific.
When it comes to selling an item as Indian or Native American, or from a specific tribe, it is unlike any other area of selling, since the Indian Arts and Crafts Act of 1990 applies. Basically the law makes it a federal offense, with a $250,000 fine (more for businesses) to misrespresent something as Indian if it was not actually made by an enrolled member or artisan of a federally-recognized U.S. tribe. It doesn't matter if it was intentional or not, the seller assumes total liability if an item is misidentified.
Thank You, I had a funny feeling it was not Navajo or even Native America.
Thanks again CanyonRoad
Billy - you could OWN that store if you chose to make an issue of it!
Celiene, what do you mean ? I din't pay a lot for it.
What Canyon Road said about a retailer misrepresenting something as Native American. She may have just made a mistake - because everyone knows everything woven is Native American!
It would be a good thing to change the title... or it will stay a native american item for future researchers :-/
Solved?
Oh okay Celiene, also Thank You kyratango.
