Dear CtTony7,
Today is your lucky day. It just so happens I am doing a study on the very type of button you dug up. I metal detect as a hobby as well and got so interested in the early "Flat buttons" that I started studying them and now that I am retired I am working on a database that would be useful for all sorts of folks who want to date the early flat gilt buttons more closely. What I am specializing is those buttons with unlisted names upon the back, similar to yours. So, I am constantly looking for those types when they are posted on the internet so I can add the info to my database.
Your button can be dated to between 1829-1831, B. Poor, was Benjamin Poor, the & Co. was Mr. Woolsey and Mr. Covers they were Dry Goods Merchant operating in New York City between 1827 and 1833, but he was only listed at 161 Pearl St. between 1829 and 1831, thus neatly dating your find.
If you liked this information please do me the favor of measuring the button both width and the Thickness in Millimeters, I would like to have that information for comparison purposes to other buttons of the same type and era.
P.S., I can use that button for my study collection so if you want I will buy it from you or swap a civil War Button for it
Regards,
Yodata
