I think this maybe for an intercom. What exactly is the chain attached to ?
Hi blunderbuss2, the rope (not chain) goes into a round plastic thing with what look like plug in points marked 'ZE' & MC', thankyou in advance of any help in identifying what I have.
Sounds like the "rope" is probably cloth insulated wires. Is the round thing a plug ?

These were 1st produced by Stirling Phones of the UK starting in 1910. GE bought them & put their on GE plates on them. When Stirling when hooters up, GE bought the equip. & continued production. The button on top is for "call or reply". This leads me to believe that these were used where there was an operator switchboard exchange, but is my general knowledge opinion, as this is not field.
