This version of the Western Electric Model 317 was made from 1911-1915. The Model 317 was made from 1907 until 1937. Earlier models of this phone had what was called the "Picture Frame" around the mouthpiece which was removed for this model. In 1916 the mouthpiece was shortened considerably and the writing tray slanted downward much more. I believe I bought the 1916 version for my brother. I will do a post on that phone later.
This phone features a 5 bar magneto seen in photo 3. As is common with phones from this era a schematic is included. Looks like batteries were not included, it says so on the schematic. The batteries would be in the open space under the magneto.
