This is a Jennens button from London. I can not find
A Jennens Co. Button with an eagle and a number 8
at the base. I am not sure what kind of clip this is
on the button. I am guessing a tie clip. Interested in
finding the history of this button. Would like to know if
this is an official part of a uniform with this clip: military or otherwise.
Thank You for any info. Another Estate sale find.
I can't explain the clip, but I can tell you for sure about the button. That's a regimental button form the uniform of the Royal Irish Fusiliers.
During the Napoleonic Wars, this regiment captured the eagle topped standard of the French 8th Regiment. The Sergeant who grabbed it reportedly said "By Jaysus, boys, I have the Cuckoo!" Whether true or not, from that time on the Royal Irish Fusiliers have had a representation of that captured eagle as one of it's insignia.
