    I found a jar of these old "buttons"? They are ceramic and the flat face measures a half inch. They stand 3/8 th inch tall.
    Are they buttons? What would they be used for? They originally came from an old store in the countryside of Virginia farming country...

      I think they are called collar studs.

      Confirm, AzTom! Used for starched collars, which were apart from the shirt, as cuffs were too :-)
