The celebration of Christmas at Rockefeller Center started informally in 1931 when workmen involved in the construction of the Center placed a small tree on Fifth Avenue, the site of the British Empire Building and La Maison Francaise. The tree was decorated with gaily colored ornaments and tinsel. In this photo workmen are lined up to receive their pay on Christmas Eve, December 24, 1931. Note St. Patrick's Cathedral in the background.
For several years my oldest daughter worked for the public relations co. representing NYC and was involved in the annual Christmas tree lighting TV program. During that time, she came upon the original photo & made a copy & framed it for my Christmas gift that year.

I really enjoy looking at this type of photograph. I can see the mens' faces, their caps and hats - what they were wearing. They have an audience standing in the gap of the fencing. I don't expect any of them drove home in one of the cars at the back right of the picture.
