    Beswick Palm Tree Vases

The second photo was from one of my photos which I had xeroxed for this article I made up in the 1990's. There were no photos for the vases in the Beswick catalog and little to no information in the first catalog. I have not seen a newer book as of yet. The photo was taken long before I had all 18 different shapes and sizes by the year 1999. Some of the finest of the rare palm vases I had several of. By 1990 I had over 60 vases in different colourways, both the matt finishes and the gloss finishes.

OTHER INFO NOT in above photos
The matt glazes were satin finished and the shaded colouring was soft and very pleasing. On the darker gloss background, for example ruby, much gilding (gold) was used and more colours - such as black, blue and green - appeared on the palm leaves, which created a very dramatic effect. This is a popular series with collectors, and it is quite a challenge to find the rare colourways. I have never owned a "British Racing Green Gloss" for instance, and only had two yellow gloss. I had some nice sky blue gloss, a red gloss collection and grey gloss also.

Thanks Antique Rose for the comment. Do you know which one or shape you missed out on?? This vase is seen in England most and then Canada. For some reason the Beswick ware was not sold for export to the states as much. So Canada can be a good place to buy.

@Phil -- I think it was a large ( either ) 1064, or 1067. That sale was like 7 years ago, but I still remember I missed getting it .................rats...
    21. PhilDMorris PhilDMorris, 9 years ago
Was that at the auction south of the city, and they had that winged statue there also. I remember being there and saw I think 2 of the beswick.

Gee, I had no idea Beswick made such unique items! I am used to seeing the standard fare of animals and such.

Hi Phil. Known Beswick for years as a utilitarian maker of domestic pottery.
I have added a plain "chrome" looking vase which in my opinion is very "Carltonesque".
This vase of yours Phil is stunning. It too reminds me of the Carlton style and influence.
I'm happy to see your display here, as with yours, the chrome style is coming through since 1946. Suprising to have a start so close to the end of the war. I wonder if they designed this as a post war production, created post war or if it was intended to be a style sold during the war. This interests me greatly as I studied WWII history as part of my degree.
      Thank you so much :)

Hi Anne, The dates are pretty accurate and if it says 1946 designed it was designed then. So post war. If you look at old catalogs for instance there was and apart from Beswick many companies starting and stepping up production after the war. 2 things I collect Sherman Jewellery and Canada Lamps were new companies that started right after the war. The big mail companies produced smaller catalogs before the war and by 1950 their production was way up esp with all the new companies.

Also to Anne, many, many companies in Canada started up right after the war in about 46 or 47, same with the U.S. For instance you just have to look at the mail order companies which supplied most of the North American market.
