This trunk was in my husband's grandmother's attic, and I'm guessing it belonged to her mother, who emigrated from Sweden in 1891 and married in 1897. The label inside says "Thomas F Moores Company Kansas City," and though it's rubbed out, the rest says, I think, "trunks, suitcases, leather." Because Thomas F Moores' dad died in 1896, the date must be after 1896 (before which the company was Moores and Sons, and they sold shoes and boots), and I wonder if the trunk could have been a wedding gift, or someone suggested a hope chest. I photographed the two lithographs that I couldn't find on the internet. I couldn't find a date on the lock or underneath, but it's an Eagle lock. I'm new to all of this, but the fingerings seem like cast iron, and the slat clamps, like tin.

The bare metal dome top looks like copper. I'm not familiar with copper sheathed trunks, but sure we have enough trunk collectors/restorers that they can educate both of us.

It never even occurred to me that it might be copper. Thanks!

It's not Copper, you can confirm this with a magnet. The lithographs were installed at random, and there were probably hundreds of different ones produced. They did not apply ant significance to any particular trunk. Nice interior, and I would agree with the late 1890's production date.

Lovely trunk with a great interior! These are sometimes referred to as "monitor" trunks or "waterfall" in terms of style.

Thanks a lot! I'm thinking about trying to refinish it at least a little. The interior is pretty fragile, but has held up relatively well--all those years in an attic, I guess.

Have you tried the magnet test ? That sure looks like copper to me .

Sorry! I just remembered to try the magnet test. Yes, it's magnetic! Thanks for the help.
