I've dusted off another treasure from the attic for a return engagement. Time hasn't shed any light on the subject. I really know nothing more about this huge onyx panel than I did two years ago when I first posted it. My guess is still Mexico, Mid Century by an unknown artist or company. -Mike-

Salvation Army has been getting in some unique things again. This incredible onyx wall plaque measures 29 1/2 " x 23 1/2" and weighs in at exactly 20 lbs ! Going to need some major hardware and a wall stud to hang it. It's carved from one slab of 3/4" onyx and is only held to the wood background with two small screws with square nuts. It looks like the real stone and not some composite resin mix. I'm not sure what type of wood the plaque is made from. It looks like walnut or mahogany to me. It's also inlaid with metal bands that surround the figure. There were only a few scratches in the wood and a little chipping to the lacquer on the metal inlay. Furniture polish made those go away for the most part. The figure itself is damage free with no chips or cracks. There are no labels or anything stamped into the wood to indicate country of origin or an artist. I strongly suspect it's from Mexico and probably dates from the 60's to early 70's. I didn't find anything online that looks even close so I have no idea of the value other than it's awesome ! -Mike-
Absolutely beautiful !~
Thanks so much Phil . :)
I love mixed media art Mike, and I find this such a special piece! If you insist on keeping it in the attic, let me know, and I'll give it a good home! :-)
It's not actually in the attic Rick...it's covering the opening of an unused fireplace at the moment. It's so heavy I'm afraid to hang it for fear of it falling off the wall and braking into a million pieces.
Very cool piece Mike !
It is absolutely fantastic Mike, and so much work in it! Onyx is hard.
Maybe you could email a museum that has a Mexican/South American specialist?
Thanks Mani, Karen, and Thomas....@Karen...Hmmm well I never even considered it to be a museum piece but it is very well done. I just thought it might be a very high end souvenir from the 60's when it was still fashionable to take a Mexican vacation.
@Thomas... They were a very advanced people but also very brutal in terms of their religion and warfare. I've seen some shows on NTGeo, fascinating people and culture.
Wow, that's cool Mike.
Thanks OGF :)
