Please help identify this button! I got this button from my grandmother. She had it displayed in her house for many years and the only info I ever heard was it was "from a military uniform." I have a couple Revolutionary War vets in the family tree, but otherwise have no idea who may have had it. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks!
It is an old English letter H, and perhaps rather a "bachelor button" than military piece :-)
Looks like a lapel pin more than a traditional clothing button.
I see nothing to suggest any military connection.

Thanks for the responses! I agree that it doesn't look like a military button. The "H" is interesting as we have a relative who was a Revolutionary War General with the name Hathorn, and perhaps that is where the military connection came from.
The two piece construction and the general appearance of your item would make me believe it is a 20th century piece.

There is nothing that I have been able to remove from the button that would make me think it is 2 pieces. I'll check again. Isn't this referred to as an "overall stud"?
Thanks
I am talking about the rim/ thin edge piece that wraps around the front and back.
I'd expect something from the 19th century to be one solid piece w/o that rim addition.

Also-- I would suspect that the rim described in #6 is holding two pieces, front and back, together.

Thanks for the info Scott. Very useful.
