My old "coffee table"

This piece belonged to my great aunt & I always loved it. After her death, my parents kept it (deeming me not responsible enough to be its caregiver)
They finally let me have it 3 years ago, and I was searching for info.... But I'm not finding anything.

It has a capital "A" engraved underneath.....
"40x" engraved on one side & "163x" on the other. It's top appears to be leather with gold stamp embellishments.

Any ideas as to who made? When?
