I inherited this from my Aunt, it is not perfect the opal appears cracked where the gold comes across it, but I think its beautiful! What style ring would this be? also type of opal? and should I replace the opal at some point or just leave it.

Very nice ring. I never saw anything similar. If it would be my ring I wouldn't replace the stone. It's nice how it is. But of course everybody is different :)

      Welcome to Cw :-)

This is such a marvelous ring!

For the era, I'd say around 1910, very naturalistic.

It seems the garland was added to hide the opal break (can see soldering where it joins the mount).

Fantastic Australian opal with red flashes!

I would leave it as it is, but make sure the stone parts are not moving...

Kiwipaul will give you more information about it if he comes around :-)

I agree with kyratango the piece was added later to protect the cracked opal . Beautiful ring and if opal is stable in ring I would leave it alone . A Gorgeous opal with all the color flashes of this size would not be cheap to replace .

Thank you! for the nice comments. What a great idea adding the garland to hide the crack, I think it also added character to the ring and I do love the stone regardless.

Hi Kyra, I'm ultra-busy at work and also at home planning renovations. It's a lovely ring, and looks like authentic Art Nouveau, I agree the cross-over was added to hide the crack. I can't recognise the hallmarks I'm afraid.

If it was mine I'd have to restore the opal, however I'm lucky being able to source opals locally and have them cut and set for reasonable prices. If you ever want it done let me know and I'll see what I can do.

Thank you! Paul, Art Nouveau, I was thing that. So torn about changing the ring but thinking about it. Best of luck with the renovations.
