I bought this painting at a thrift store because of the eyes and the melancholy emotion I could see. It is painted on a brown velvety canvas that has been glued onto a legit art board. Paintings on velvet are usually a big yuck for me but I was curious about this one. I think it is a self portrait of the artist in his younger days.

I agree with the "big yuck" about velvet paintings - I tend to run away - but this one is quite different. I think this could be a self portrait of himself in his younger days.

Yes Efesgirl, I think it is a self portrait too. I only paid $5.00 and wonder if I could donate it to a museum in Cape Breton or Montreal. I bought it to save from a landfill. It is very difficult to paint so well on fabric.

Try also University Collage of Cape Breton (UCCB) I think he taught here in his later years. This Is a one of a kind and I've never seen a portrait of anyone by him.

Thanks Caperkid. I will contact them too. They may like a self-portrait if they have some of his landscapes too.

this would be awesome on a wall with just one spot light highlighting his face!!
      Imagine seeing that at night!!!
I would keep him ...but hey that's just me ;)

Well he has passed now and when I look at it, it reminds me too much of a ghost peeking in.
