I foundthis at a local antique shop and had to buy it. We think it's to go over a photograph? It's so beautifully embroidered, and the blood stains are little odd, but if anyone can help I'd be so thankful! I love these mysteries I keep coming across!
Thank you in advance!
What a wonderful piece . Looks like a Mother made it and put photo of her military son in it . I love it . Maybe she poked herself with needle when embroidering it and bled on it I have done that .
Certainly looks like a small embroidery piece for a photograph. Probably dates from WW1.
This type of item was popular in the late 19th century/ early 20th century and had its origins in Asian Navy tour embroidery.
Here is an example of an Asian piece:

Is it just my imagination, or does it look machine embroidered?
In addition to the Asian stuff, stuff like this was made during WWI in Europe for sale to soldiers, but that stuff was usually hand embroidered (there were a lot of women who were paid for piecework to make extra needed money)
