Picked this lovely carving from a recycling bin yesterday. Paid $1.
I assume it is Chinese soapstone. It is mounted on a metal base (that has been painted); and then, the previous owner mounted the sculpture on a second, painted wood base and turned it into a lamp. I removed the wooden base because it contributed nothing to the aesthetic quality. There is a lot of patina throughout.
I did not clean it.
The lamp works but it is independent of the carving.
Design:
Double vases or bush pots; Lotus Flowers, leaves, Bird.
With all that, the carving is still intact and not damaged.
Approx 6 inches height.
I'm curious of the age of the carving and the quality of the soapstone.
Any help?
A lot of Chinese soapstone was carved between about 1900 and the start of WWII. What little can be dated is through provenance. That's a nice piece you have, traditional carving, likely pre-war.
