I am unsure if this large medal is incomplete or not. This was from a church jumble sale a few years ago and the date on the medal is 1884.It looks to be sterling silver- I cannot find any stamps or markings.I love the shield shape and found the writing very sweet it is from a church choir( and a few friends)dedicating the medal to some-one they had a high respect for and appreciated the work he did.It is about 2 inches in length and width.
That's really neat. Love the engraving, so well done. Do you know what the Saline means?
As far as I know it refers to some-one who is one of the predominant members of the choir or like the principal dancer would be in a ballet:)
Ok, thanks.
They really filled that with text as much as possible.
Saline Louisiana or Saline Michigan etc...I think it's a location and not a choir position. RER
Nice 19th century engraving.
Agree with loumanal-- suspect that Saline is a location.

I thought at first it could be Saline a little village in Fife, Scotland but I don't think saline refers to a place in this context.
It has to be taken with in the context of what is written on the medal and I don't think it refers to a place but rather a role or position of higer standing.
Thank-you for your helpful imput its great that your interested and talking about this great piece of history:))
I did not say saline was a choir position -precentor means a principal position in a choir.
Saline means high /ascending
Saline is a place in Ireland.
Alex Melville is listed here, (near the top of page 7) along with his daughter, Jane Melville, in the 1874-1899 school records of the Saline School.
On page 42 is an Ordance Survey map of Saline, which is in the counties of Fife and Kinross.

I meant to write Scotland, not Ireland.....

That is what I said Saline in Fife Scotland in my earlier post.
But I do not think that is what Saline refers to on the medal as a place.
Look up salient in the dictionary
I do think Bonnie got the answer...
Medal says Alex Melville was "acting as precentor HERE
Saline"
:-)
Iooking at it again and I think it is Saline in Fife.
