I found this vase today in a junk shop. It seemed unusual so I took it home. It's 6.5'' tall and my gut feeling is somebody bought it decades ago as a souvenir from some Asian or African country. It might be vintage because of the wear of its' bottom.
I can't find anything about this kind of decoration on the net. It looks the metal was glued on the pottery with some kind of black gloop, what makes the vase look bit dirty. Can somebody help me out? I appreciate any information. There isn't any makers' mark.
Possibly Awaji Ware, Can you add a picture of the base?

Hi, a very lovely piece ! Are you sure it's metal on the surface and not silver or silverplated? I Always check with a magnet :) It reminds me a bit of the lovely vases of Rosenthal but they used to use fine silverwear on the surface, so I could be totally wrong there.

Yeah..more likely Awaji..1890? Ive got one awaji piece with bamboo around..one of my favorite vases, but I never knew they used silver as well..very nice to know. You might have found a vase from an Japanese Island!
Thanks for adding a pic if the base. Clay color and different colored glaze on the base aren't consistent with Awaji.
Thank you Blanca and art.pottery for your infos, I learned a lot. I never heard about Awaji ware before art.pottery mentioned it. To be honest my vase seems to me like bit of 'primitive' folk art.
Thanks Blanca for the suggestion to look at the metal. I think it will be silver, it's not magnetic. The silver plates are fused together with a solder, so the finishing touches are bit crude.
