Can anyone identify this item?
Yes. It is made in Italy, sometimes the marble is marked made in Italy. Very, very rarely is a maker of any sort identified. This one is made in the early 1970's, and was part of a very large import, export business with lamps as the major part. Italy, the states, Canada were pretty much all involved. Your lamp is definitely Italy. I seen a lot of them at garage sales in the 90's I remember, sometimes I bought them just for the marble table, if they used expensive black or red marbles. In your example the workmanship looks very good as sometimes the plaster ones were very bad, possibly made in California but depended on the style. I like that your table looks quality. A lot of them were made of separate pieces, with separate statues and tables. I would say fewer were made with beveled marble edges, a nice touch on yours.
These lamps, or the castings (parts) were manufactured by L&L, it was a company in northern jersey which closed its doors in 1976 or 78 they started production of lamps in the 1940's.. The smoked glass components were defiantly a common trate though the shade is seemingly to small for this piece and I personally think it was added later!!! These lamps mostly had large shades that complimented the lamps size! The three hooks below the light bulb also would have had dangling from it smoke glass balls attached to castings matching he lamps caricature!!!
