Kamei were a huge producer of art glass in post war Japan, and are one of the better known brands in the West because of their successful exporting program.
Yet they are still clouded in mystery for me. I have found very little history on the company and only know they were established around 1910, were based in Osaka, made and wholesaled their own and others glass, and went bankrupt in the late 1990s.

There is no doubt they made good glass.

I have had this vase a few years but never really appreciated it too much.
Now I really like it ! (have I grown up?)
It's a relatively common decor for Kamei and came in a number of colours.
I really like this red and white; the red is a beautiful rich colour and contrast so well. I like also that there is no blend where the colours meet so there is no pink to dirty the colour scheme.

Cased in clear and nicely finished with a polished base and hot worked rim.

    Height 26cm (10in)

      Sweet!
      I'm appreciating it right now.
You are lucky that you have a tag on this.
Pieces like this would take me a month to find out who made it.
In the end it doesn't really matter who made it but damn it.I still want to know

Oh, Karen, you've outdone yourself. This is truly stunning. Wow. Wow.

Your white vases that you posted before Christmas and that I adore most are like snow, that blue vase from Deano earlier is like a splash of water, this vase is a flame of fire. I mean it's just incredible. The Japanese are absolute masters, they have no equal in glass.

      I bow, I bow! :)

Thanks Bonnie and Blade - glad you like it! It's on a windowsill now :)

Gruff, Japanese glass is often tricky to identify and is regularly confused with Murano or Czech glass. In the end, glass is glass and is usually beautiful. I love most of it, I just had to find my interest, and that is now Japanese glass! Thanks.

      Thanks Sean!

Ivonne you know I thought about the red and white and how it is such a great combination that turns up often in our lives....see, your flag! Thanks for the comment and love.

It would go well there Ken with beautiful jewels scattered around. Thanks mate.

I'm surprised it took you a while to appreciate this, Karen. I think it's marvellous, ice and fire trapped in a lovely glass case!

What a great looking piece. The red and the white are distinct and deep. How much does it weigh racer4four?

Thanks Mudwoman. Like many of this era Japanese glass the vase has a thick clear glass casing and clear ribs have been added to the sides. They have been hot worked and rippled, so you are quite right to see that!

Thanks for the description Peggy, fire and ice! I like that.
When I bought this one I was going through my Kurata stage and this is a long way from Kurata glass, so it didn't hit the spot for me then. It does now!
      Maybe I'm just contrary.

Good question TinMachine. This vase is about average for Japanese glass vases of this time (60s/70s) at 1.6kg.
I have some well over 4kg so this is a relative light weight.
The clear glass is very thick and the red and white deep in the case which gives the colour it's intensity. Glad you like it, and thanks!

I can see that it grew on you Karen. It looks much bigger in the second pic! Couldn't help it sorry :) Seriously, it's a lovely vase, and I don't know what there's not to like!

I found this exact vase and am debating purchasing it. This page is all I can find on it. Can you give me more info like when it was made and value?
