    katherines…
    (247 items)

So three years ago I wanted to give my goddaughter something special for Christmas, I decided to give her one of my grandmother's religious medals, small and delicate, a very pretty image of the Virgen de Guadalupe in a filigree setting, 14K gold. I scouted out 14K gold chains at various jewelry stores and online but they all looked distressingly new, then one day I went for a pizza at the local strip mall and on an impulse stepped into the little pawn shop a few doors down. Sure enough there was a delicate chain of older gold in the case, it was a good price with a seasonal discount, there was a pendant of three pink stones graduated large to small strung on the chain; I took it. Chain and medallion gifted away, I set the pendant aside until recently, yesterday to be exact, picked it up and tried to take a close look at it -- and failed. The thing is I didn't remember what the guy at the pawn shop said the stones were, and I'm not partial to pink stones. That's right, I said pink. The stones you see up in the photo? What the camera doesn't pick up is looking at these they're pink. At a glance they're pink. I thought they were pink and that's why I hadn't given the pendant much thought. Well, no they apparently aren't. If I pick up the pendant and look at it -- I can't explain it but there's all kinds of colors and no colors at the same time in the stones. Looking at it right now, there is and isn't pink, a deep translucent violet, champagne gold. But it's almost like an illusion of colors. I tried taking photos of the various shades but the camera doesn't catch what I'm seeing. Against a solid white background and without looking directly at them, they show pink. Turn it to the side and over, they look champagne gold. Turning this way and that or trying to look right at it, the stones pale or darken or turn rose red or deep violet. I'm almost inclined to think that even though they are set in gold, these are treated glass of some sort, though looking through the loupe, they don't look like glass. Some sort of treated CZ, maybe? Any ideas, opinions, welcome. Thanks for looking.

MYSTERY SOLVED: kyratango and Efesgirl both called my stone Mystic Topaz, which led me to look up that stone but the colors weren't right. The source I read said Mystic was in the blue and green range, Azotic were in the pink and gold range, exactly what I had. After a little further research, it was clear what I had was Azotic Topaz. Azotic Topaz is a clear colorless Topaz that has been enhanced by thinly coating the underside with a chemical called Azotic, hence the name. It was invented in the late 90s, with only a small batch of stones being released every year. Value of these stones have increased with their growing popularity and relative scarceness, though they are still considered mainly a fashion stone and therefore quite affordable.

I have to say, you can't appreciate this stone unless you see it in your hand and with your own eyeballs. The colors are truly magical, they don't shift as with a diamond, they don't morph, they don't blend. It's like they are simultaneously there and not there. When I first picked up my pendant I was looking for pink stones then noticed that I couldn't exactly see pink. I thought my eyes were deceiving me. The color was violet, no it was rose, no it was pale gold. I couldn't focus on any one color. Yet setting it down and looking at it, the stones sparkle fiercely with color. They are truly magical, the qualities best appreciated as with my pendant's three stones.

That's a really pretty pendant! I am also not partial to pink, but this pendant is really nice. I have a pair of mystic topaz earring purchased in Turkey, and they are full of all sorts of colors. Really beautiful.

kyratango, you and Bonnie deserve all the credit. I believed that one of the people here, but most likely one of the two of you, would know what I had, and I would have never found out on my own. So thank you very much again! :)
