My mom was given this ring when she was maybe 14 (she's now 93)by her crazy Aunt Madeleine who was a trick rider in a circus in the 30s. Mom never wore it much and I always played with it in her jewellry box...I called it the bug eye ring. In the last few years I have come to love it and wear it all the time. I always wondered how old it was or what the stones are. I cleaned it today in soapy water....I doubt if it was ever cleaned in all the years it existed lol. The dingy brownish stones are now a brilliant honey gold color!! Which makes me even more curious to know what they are, if anything. It's clearly Marked Stirling but that's all I know. Any help appreciated.

That's beautiful! The stones are the color of a citrine. The shank looks 1920s. What a great thing to own.

Thanks Efesgirl. 20s would make sense. Citrine might be it.

The bug eye ring is probably yellow topaz. It's a very expensive stone because you can't find them , it's my birthstone, my grandmother gave me a ring when I was 16 of yellow gold and yellow topaz. If you ever want to sell it let me know.

You would have to have a 30 carat topaz to cost $204.07 which a is a medium reddish Orange.
A 30 carat citrine will cost you 25.95 which is a medium orange.
      Estimated retail averages are given.

Very interesting article Gillian. Looks like I'll never know what my ring is from just looking at it. The color change after cleaning it was just astounding. It just glows. What I find so beautiful about gemstones is how you see different flashes of this or that depending if you are outside or under different lights.

The two-stone design may look a bit strange to us now but there was a time early in the 20th century when it was rather popular. Love the name "bug-eye"!
