This vase is eye catching, for many reasons: It is highly carved. It has a lovely orange-ochre glaze. It has 2 conjoined necks. This vase was on the shelf of the Goodwill for a week. It caught my attention because it is unique, and seemingly crude, but after a few days of passing it by, I picked it up today, a lot of work went into this. At first I thought it was slab construction, then I thought it was thrown on a wheel, upon inspection, could it be a combination of the two? The glaze in the mouths is striated ochre and rust colors, the lines are vertical the inside is glazed, but not as richly as the openings. The base is slightly convex, another reason I think this is a slab construction. The clay is almost white.

The vase measures 6" at the base and is 8" at its widest point in the middle. The height is 8.5". The mark on the bottom either reads, "q S" or "Spb" depending on which way you read it. It weighs 3 lbs, which is lighter than it looks.

I have seen that mark here in Virginia many times on pottery in the local GW's....I probably have a few pieces packed away.

That is interesting. I would love to see them sometime. I imagined that this was made by an angry teenager.
