With auspicious SHOU character for "longevity",
these nearly antique earrings (non pierced old screw system is the clue!) were intended to carry perfume impregnated fabric or sponges.
So raffined jewelry! Each movement of your head would wrap you with your favourite scent :-)
The balls unscrew to open, as shown they are tightly adjusted...
Seller didn't know what he had ;-D
Marked SILVER to the upper part's back.

Very interesting...why would they not put perfume directly on skin like it's done these days?
LOL don't you love it when it works out that way! I have never seen earrings like these, and I think they are beautiful.
Anna, thank you for your interest!
I think, due to the amount of perfume, that way provided more lasting to the perception of scent. But this is only my guess :-)
Bonnie, I too love the naive sellers ;-D
Thanks for your cute comment!

Oh goodness -- Never knew there was such a thing...........Wonder if that is why women *dab* perfume behind their ears.
~ ~ Maybe that is where the history started from to Dab behind ear...
Adorment inventivity is endless :-))
