This brooch was in a showcase for around two months. I had a look at it when I first saw it, but because the price was $30, I passed. I spend only this kind of money on something if I know what it is, I really like it, and/or I know it is worth more.

A bit over a week ago, I went to the same store and found the brooch in the junk section for $3.99. I still don't know what it is, but I like a good mystery and so I bought it.

There is a mark on the brooch. To me, it looks like a flower, possibly arose. I searched for more than an hour on line and checked all of my books but I cannot find anything!

The faux pearls somehow remind me Miriam Haskel but the style of the brooch does not. However, I think that the brooch could date back to around the 1950's.

Any ideas/suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks for looking:)

A pretty brooch. Don't recognize the mark.

$30...they are out of their cotton pickin' minds....should have been $3.99 to begin with!

I agree, but things are more expensive here ever since Goodwill closed down in Ontario. There is almost nothing for less than $5 anymore. The strange thing is that some of the silver jewelry is priced higher in the second-hand stores than in the discount shopping places for new merchandise. Sometimes one gets lucky and there is a real vintage or antique piece in between the other junk.
      Tanks for your comment, Efesgirl:)

I checked a website with marks for identifying costume jewelry, but that mark wasn't there. :-(((

I get great jewelry from the flea markets and the pawn shops. There are still thrift shops here who don't recognize silver and gold, so it goes out on display with the junk. :-))))

Good for you, here the competition is really bad. Pawn shops are mostly very expensive, there are not too many flea markets, and thrift shops seem to think everything is worth a lot. There is one place I sometime go to and you should see the parking lot!!! It is full of luxury cars! The only place one can get a little "treasure" is a church sale. But because of the winter, there is nothing going on now. And even if there are church sales, there are long line-ups and you should see the old ladies pushing their way through! It's no fun!
I have seen your recent posts and can only be impressed....

There are a few "thrift" shops that think they are antique shops. I quit going to those places. Not paying high end prices for something they got for free to begin with...

Here in the Netherlands, there are flea markets all year round. During the winter they are held in municipal buildings, sport halls or cafes. If there is really nothing interesting in Holland, I can skip over to Belgium or Germany. That's once in a blue moon, though.

Once again you are lucky. Here in Canada everything is so far apart. If you add the bad weather, winter is a dry season for collectors like me. I have been to some auctions but that can be very pricy too, especially when people are after the same stuff. I am going to Prague in a few months but I don't have any hopes of finding anything there because I am not a local. From there I will drive for about two hours to my hometown in Germany. I have checked out every place there but haven't found anything good either. I guess I have to wait for the summer here in Ontario - LOL

That is a very pretty brooch, I can't make out the hallmark too well. If you're in Canada, could be an American mark?

In my hometown of San Diego, there is a mixed bag of hunting grounds: thrift stores are mostly reasonable, there are vintage flea markets, there are the swap meets, and yard sales. Because it is such a big city, I could go out every day and come home with treasures. Yikes! :P

Lucky you, katherinescollections! I live in Brampton, close to Toronto. Brampton has not much to offer. There are just a handfull of stores. If I want to see somthing different, I have to drive for some time to Toronto, Mississauga, or some of the samller towns and cities. In the winter, this is very often a problem. We had an icestorm yesterday. I helped my daughter to get the ice off her car but our cars are still covered with a layer of about half an inch of ice. I can't even open the door!
      Happy Easter!
