Walking through GW last week I saw some little ceramic owls and thought of the 'Owl Craze' I've noticed recently on the usual online forums. While looking at the forlorn pair, I noticed the unique drawer pattern of the big piece of brown furniture they were sitting on. Opening the top drawer I immediately recognized the Conant Ball logo from months of dreaming about owning my own piece of MCM history.
After checking it over and seeing it was in pretty good shape I hauled it home in the back of the blue truck - ecstatic at my thrift score. Two days later, I returned to the same store and found the matching bed stand lonely in the same corner and took it home as well. Funny thing was the bed stand had the little custom jewelry tray for the dresser banging around the bottom of the drawer - cool!
After looking at the two pieces for a couple of days out in the garage, researching what I had found turned up some very interesting information. Touted on 1st dibs, Chairish and the like as Russel Wright designed with its 9 staggered drawers, the lowly redit had many threads supporting evidence provided by the granddaughter(?) of designer Leslie Diamond that indeed this piece was made in the 1950's and was part of Conant Ball Modernmates line of furniture, that Mr. Wright had designed in the 30's and 40's for CB (his American Modern Line) but not in the 50's as he had moved on to other engagements.
The earth shakes !!!
So cool! It's an amazing feeling to literally stumble across a piece of history. Congratulations!
