    First off, one of the 4 labels proclaims, "50 Per Cent Alcohol." So.... Great medicine.

    Secondly, it has a very strong, sweet scent still that pierces the nose.

    This pictorial Hazeltine & Perkins Drug Co. bottle from Grand Rapids, Michigan, was actually a difficult buy. The lady at the antique shop couldn't get my charge-card to work in her machine, so I had to wait for the owner, who was an hour late, to come and help us out.
    There was another bottle, but it had a chip in it and they didn't give me a discount on it even after the hassle for this (the owner said he husband had priced it, and she left it at that.
    My "captor" said she felt like she was holding me ''hostage.''

    H. & P. D. Co., embossed on the bottom of their bottles, was a wholesale druggist that had been around from 1873 on to at least the 1940s.

    This neat tooled-top bottle also tells the buyer information like where Rhubarb was grown, alternate names, and it's Order. This and the general label of what it treats leads me to believe this was not a prescription type, but a general over-the-counter medicine one could go and pick up at any time (during business hours.)

    To see all of the labels, I had to remove some of the waxed paper that likely protected the bottle's label a century ago.
    I had not cleaned up the glass before photos, so forgive its smudginess.

      Stomachic= stomach ache?
    2. SpiritBear, 9 years ago
      No, "Stomachic" = helps digest food and makes you eat more.

      The most common medicines of the 1800s/1900s you see are laxatives/purgatives and stomachics. It was just such a big issue back then that they made many, so many survived-- out of other things they made less of.

      Interesting...in this day and age the very opposite of stomachic seems to be the most sought after thing! LOL

      Sadly so. I can relate to that too much.

      Apparently, they did charge me three times-- I notice that when reviewing my spending summary last night.
      So I got the excess charge back today.
