I bought this wooden music box painted in red and gold at an auction for my mother since she had lived there. I tried to clean it but it just made it dull. What can I do?
Thank you for your help.

I have trays from same company, I just wipe off and rub with beeswax to shine up.
Hi,
Dizzydave has good advice. But I wouldn't wipe off too vigorously, and do a test spot first.
I'm sorry about the music box you purchased. The problem is it was made to look that way, not dirty exactly just perhaps well used, and old. I don't honestly think it is worth it to try to fix it. There are hundreds of like music boxes, boxes, trays, bowels, tables made by the same company, that are very effective, (in that they look 'antique' and very old), and not expensive at all. (Except the person who was trying to sell a box for nearly $90!)
I'm putting a link here to the google image page for Florentia music boxes. They are sold through eBay, Etsy etc.

The other thing is Florentia is not a place it is the company that makes these items - they are made in Italy. They are vintage - some made in the 50's(?), 60's and up to the present day. I think they are quite lovely.
That's one hell of a typo Gillian - I'm so sorry - can you just try and ignore it.
Yep, don't rub, just light wipe, the paint on these will rub off, thats why I use little wax gentle circles when applying.
