This compact/cigarette case was made by Harvey Matthews in 1912. The ladies certainly, in those days, knew how to do their makeup and smoke at the same time in style. Everything is in working order. On the outside is a diamond style pattern, on the front is a plain circle which would normally have been engraved with the owners initials. On the inside it is gold washed, with one side for cigarettes and the other side there is a small mirror and what seems to be a makeup compartment with a puff, or it could have been for coins. There is a chain with a large finger ring which I presume is the way it was carried. The hallmarks are for Birmingham, H M for Harvey Matthews and n for the year 1912. There is also a number 12 which I think is its manufacture number, also on the finger ring are the marks 7 n.
Many thanks for looking
Lovely Minaudière!
The compartment with the delicate puff is for face powder, coins holders had a mechanism with a spring :-)
Thanks kyra, I knew there was a name for it but for the life in me I couldn't remember. I couldn't even find it online, I'm brain dead at the moment.????
This is so cool I've never seen them as one case.
Sweet! :)
Thank you Caperkid and OneGoodFind, for stopping by and leaving you gracious comments. After jewellery, I do like to collect antique or vintage silver compacts and cigarette cases. :-)
Many thanks
